What happens to you when you Die?

Many of us have questions about death, where we are going when we die, and what becomes of our body, and spirit.  My hope is to be able to answer those questions Biblically, using the Bible to show what happens to us when we die.  I also want to address why we have to die.  Other than Elijah and Enoch, 10 out of 10 people will experience death.  I just want everyone to be prepared, and be prepared for life after death for those who trust Jesus completely, and those who do not accept the free gift of salvation from Christ.

First I want to look at  why we have to die.  (All verses are from the NKJV)

Genesis 3:19  God tells Adam:
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread
Till you return to the ground,
For out of it you were taken;
For dust you are,
And to dust you shall return.”

Hebrews 9:26-28
26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

The reason we die is because of the fall of Adam's fall in the garden.  Death was not apart of God's original plan.  God had intended us to live forever with him in the Garden of Eden.  When Adam and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit, God had to banish them from the Garden due to their disobedience.    Because of the fall in the garden, Jesus had to come to earth to die for our sins, and rise from the dead.  Our main purpose in this life is to accept Jesus as our Savior.  His heart is layed out for us in John 3:16:  To read "The reason for the Cross" click here.

Second, I want to look at what happens after we die. This is as soon as we take our final breath on this earth.

2 Corinthians 5:8We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Bible sates that as soon as we die that we will be in the presence of God.  Also the Bible is clear that every one of us will bow down to Jesus, and we all will confess Jesus is Lord, whether we accepted Jesus as our Savior or not.   Where we go from there is up to our belief in God.  Those of us who accept Jesus as their savior will be ushered into heaven, and those who do not believe will be entered into Hell.

Third I want to look at what happens to a person that did not accept Christ as their Savior.

Matthew 13:37-43 He(Jesus) answered and said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one. 39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

Matthew 25:41-43 “Then He(Jesus) will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

 Revelation 14:9-12
Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed [f]in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and [g]brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and [h]whoever receives the mark of his name.” 12 Here is the [i]perseverance of the [j]saints who keep the commandments of God and [k] their faith in Jesus.
Revelation 20:7-15
When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison, and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the [c]seashore. And they came up on the [d]broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the [e]saints and the beloved city, and fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and [f]brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose [g]presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and [h] books were opened; and another [i]book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the [j]books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if [k]anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Hell is a place where there is eternal torment.  Anyone in hell is completely separated from God eternally.  also those who end up in hell are judged by God by their works, and no one will be found righteous, because no one is perfect.  Hell is a place that was designed for Satan, and his angels, not humans.  Because of our hard hearts we can end up in Hell, by not choosing the gift of Salvation.

Compare this to the view of Heaven:

John 14:1-6   “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions;[a] if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.[b] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Jesus tells us that there are many mansions in Heaven.  Thomas then plainly asks Jesus how to find the way to Heaven.  Jesus plainly says HE is the way to eternal life, no other way.  Period.  Can't get their through Mary, Buddha, Islam, or any other way.  Jesus is the ONLY way!!!!!

Philippians 1:19-26 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. 21 For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. 23 For[c] I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you. 25 And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith, 26 that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.

Romans 14:7-10  For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and rose[b] and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

Heaven:

Rev 21:10 NASB And he carried me away [g] in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God. Her [h]brilliance was like a very costly stone, as a stone of crystal-clear jasper. 12 [i]It had a great and high wall, [j] with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels; and names were written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 The one who spoke with me had a [k]gold measuring rod to measure the city, and its gates and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the [l]rod, [m]fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal. 17 And he measured its wall, [n]seventy-two yards, according to human [o]measurements, which are also angelic measurements. 18 The material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like [p]clear glass. 19  The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald; 20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.
22 I saw no [q]temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its [r]temple. 23 And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24  The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth [s]will bring their glory into it. 25 In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed; 26 and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; 27 and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those [t]whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Such a nice picture of what we have to look forward to.  This is something only those who accept Christ as their Savior will be able to see.  A city made completely of Gold!!!!  A wall made of precious stones!   No darkness at all!!!

I hope this helps with that question of what happens to us when we die.  Please post your questions below if you have any questions.   If any other religion tries to tell you there is another way to heaven but Christ, do not believe them, but compare what they say to the Bible.

In Christ,

-Kevin
